Digital Tuner Resource in Q&A
What does digital tuner to watch freeview channels on a tv mean? I have just brought a 22" LCD Digital TV for my daughter. It states that is has a digital tuner to watch Freeview channels. Does this mean she can get Freeview or do I need to purchase additional equipment?

Southern_Northener replied: "It means it has Freeiew built-in. You simply need to plug in an ariel, scan for channels and your daughter will have full access to Freeview. Or you can just use Analog instead if you so wish. It can do both."

Sdfghjkl replied: "you can try satellite tv .it's a vrey good and economic software. i hope you can love ,thanks GO TO "

if my tv has a digital tuner what do I need to receive reception after the dtv conversion? I have a Vizio flat screen lcd television, and I know it has a digital tuner. However, with the switch taking place in less than 60 days, do I still need a converter box? Or do I just don't connect anything but an antenna?

R T replied: "If your set has a digital (ATSC) tuner built in, then you are all set. All you need is a good quality, properly installed antenna and you could be enjoying free Over The Air digital TV tonight. A lot of it will be HD, too. The converter boxes are a digital tuner and an analog down converter for old analog sets. A modern digital set will have the right stuff built in."

is a digital tuner needed in a plasma with full high definition already? i want to buy this dvd recorder and there are 2 types: one with digital tuner, the other with no digital tuner. does the digital tuner make the picture any clearer?

deviated_2 replied: "The digital tuner is for picking up a digital signals over the air. So you would have to buy an antenna that picks up that signal. I bet it says ATSC on it. Yes the tuner would make for a good picture with an antenna. hope it helps"

Can the digital tuner in a VCR act as a converter box for analog tv? I want to keep using my VCRs after the changeover. A DVR would not fit my situation. I get my signal thru rabbit ears & currently have analog tvs. Would it work to get a VCR with a digital tuner & watch tv through the VCR to get the digital channels? I mostly tape shows & watch them later.

AnnluvsMaxMillion replied: "no it wont ..i work for cable i know ..i get ppl like u everyday ..stop being old fashion"

mguardian_north replied: "Yes it will, if the VCR has DTV written on it. But you'll prolly also need an RF converter because newer electronics do not output to channel 3/4."

sotires replied: "Yes it will. Provided it is a VCR with a proper digital tuner (how old is your VCR? check the manual to see if it really is digital). This will pick up the digital signal, decode it and pass it on to the TV. But if you really want peace of mind, just try it, as soon as there is a digital signal in your area (chances are there is one already). The other solution would be to connect the digital converter to the input of the VCR. The problem would then be that you could only record the program that the convertor is tuned into."

link replied: "Most likely no. Very few VCRs exist with digital tuners. And they would be way more expensive than one of the converter boxes. You'll need to get one of the digital converter boxes. Try one of these: Zenith DTT900 DigitalStream DTX9900 Insignia"

How can I tell if my TV has a digital tuner in it? New TV's have digital tuners and don't need that "converter box" to pick up over the air digital signals. How do I know if my TV has a digital tuner in it or not? What is the cheapest TV you can buy that has a digital tuner in it?

R T replied: "The most accurate way is to look at the owners manual or Google the model number. What you are looking for is if the set has an "ATSC Tuner". If you purchased the set in the last two or three years, it most probably does. If your set has an ATSC turner built in, you will not need a converter box. Your set may also have a QAM tuner. QAM is the standard for digital cable. I hope this helps. Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted."

Stephen P replied: "The cheapest TV with a digital tuner is about $114 at Walmart. For about $150 your could get a 20" model. If you already have a good old TV you are better off getting a good converter (I recommend the Zenith Insignia model). The digital tuner in the better converters is as good as you can find which is likely to be better than whatever is in the "cheapest" DTV. Ways to tell if your TV has a digital tuner: Go into the TV's menu, all TVs with a digital tuner have a way to scan for digital antenna signals. If you find this, go ahead and tell it to scan for them. Most areas already have digital broadcasts and most people can use their old antennas to receive them. Look in the owner's manual (or google the TV's model number) and check the specs. Digital over the air tuners will be listed as "ATSC" tuners. If the spec just says "181 channel" cable ready tuner, it does not have a digital tuner. If all else fails, e-mail me the make & model # of the TV."

How can I tell if my tv has a digital tuner without the manual? It is capable of High Def. I understand that doesn't mean it has a built in digital tuner. To use an antenna I have to use a converter box. I want to be able to record programs. I have looked on the DTV sites and can't find this particular answer. It has an RF input. I realize all tvs have tuners but does the RF input mean it is a digital tuner?

TV guy replied: "Does it have an RF input ? (Coax). Then it has a tuner. If it has a tuner. Find the model of the TV (in the back), then search for its spec on the web (or post it here). If you can find channels like 9.1 then it has a digital tuner, but if you can't you may simply have a lousy antenna, so checking the specs is the most accurate option."

Stephen M replied: "If it has a coaxial antenna input on the back of the TV, it has a tuner. it is that simple. Here is a picture of what you are looking for. >It has an RF input. I realize all tvs have tuners but does the RF input mean it is a digital tuner?< No, it just means the TV has a tuner. You hve already told us the TV is capable of high def. This information, as long as it is accurate, together will the fact your TV has a coaxial input, tells me your TV has a digital tuner. Also, all TVs do not have tuners, just so you have at least been given all the correct information."

Stephen P replied: "(This answer assumes you are located in the US) Having a RF input does not mean it has a digital tuner. A lot of "High Def" TVs were made with only analog tuners. There are two ways to tell if your TV has a digital tuner. 1.Look on the back of your TV for a label with the make, model, and manufacture date of the TV. Digital tuners became mandatory for TVs manufactured for the US market after Feb 2007. You can google the make & model of the TV and see if it has an "ATSC" (antenna) digital tuner and a "QAM" cable digital tuner. If you have trouble doing this, e-mail the info to me and I'll see if I can find it 2. All TVs with a digital tuner have a way to "scan" for digital antenna signals. This is similar to the scan that you did when you set up your converter box. Look around your TV's menu for a place to have it scan for digital antenna signals."

classicsat replied: "If the original remote has a "-" or "." button (different from the --/--- button some remotes have), it likely has digital tuner If it has an optical or coaxial digital audio out, it likely has digital tuner. If it says anything about licensing by Dolby Labs, or has a DD logo on the set or documentation, it likely is digital. My digital set has all three."

Why am i only getting a few channels when i hook up digital tuner? My dad got the digital tuner in preparation for the switch come february. When we hooked it up we could only get 3 channels? We ran the auto-scan several times and it was still only picking up those same 3. Why?

Arthurlikesbeer replied: "Cause they are not all digital yet --2009"

Danny replied: "Depends on your location and your antenna. You might want to get a amplified antenna. I'm in OKC and I get 22 channels with a RCA wal-mart brand."

wires replied: "With digital transmissions, you either get the signal or you don't. You don't get a ghosty or noisy signal. If you get it, it's clear and sharp. There are some instances where it's right on the edge and you get a signal, then don't get it. Or you get blocks on the screen as the decoding cuts in and out. But for the vast majority you either get it or you don't. You might need a larger antenna or maybe it needs to be turned to get all the stations. I had to turn mine to get all the local digital broadcasts."

What built-in digital tuners are compatible with a QAM tuner? My local cable TV company says that if I buy my own DVD recorder that it has to have a built-in QAM tuner but I'm having trouble locating such a beast. (Yes I've called Best Buy, etc. and no one can give me a straight answer.) So can anyone tell me what digital tuners are compatible with a QAM tuner? Thanks!

jay replied: "qam is quadrature amplitude modulation . What your looking for is a dvd burner with a digital tuner in it. qam is the digital standard for transmission, cable and OTA. if it says digital it's a qam tuner"

classicsat replied: "QAM isn't the standard for OTS, 8VSB is. QAM is what you need to look for in the manual or spec list. There is a good chance if it has an ATSC tuner it can tune QAM. About the only digital tuners that cannot tune QAM are the SD digital converters made to get digital broadcast on an older TV. Those are prohibited from tuning QAM as part of the coupon program to purchase them."

Is there a difference between a digital tuner TV & a digital receiver TV? I want to buy a portable TV that will work when the big signal change takes place in february. I need to know if there is a difference between & digital Tuner & digital receiver. Thank you.

link replied: "A digital tuner takes the signal from the antenna or other source and picks out the selected frequency or channel. By digital receiver, it's usually meant a TV with a digital tuner. Standalone digital tuners are pretty rare, and pricey. What you want if TV with a digital tuner. The consumer electronics industry calls this an integrated HDTV."

Kenny M replied: "Stand alone digital tuners are NOT expensive. They run $50-70 and that is what the government is giving $40 rebate cards for. Go to and you can get up to two coupon/rebate cards for your old tv's. All new tv's from tier 1 and 2 brands have digital tuners built in. Even our "SD" tv's have digital tuners built in. The brands to watch for are tier 3 like philips, akai, insiginia, westinghouse, olivia, vizio, soyo, go video, polaroid, rca, etc... BUT even a lot of those have built in tuners now. One big thing to remember. If you have cable or satellite, this feb '09 change over does NOT affect you. It only affects people who receive their tv channels/programming with an antenna from over-the air."

R T replied: "What you need to look for are digital receivers. They will have the tuners built in and will work stand alone. Here are a couple of examples:=&sr=1&kw=portable+tv&origkw=portable+TV&parentPage=search I hope this helps. Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted."

What is the difference between an Analog and a Digital Tuner? I am buying a TV tuner for my Laptop computer and I found two different kinds; analog and digital. What is the difference? I know that analog is the older one, but does it effect the channels I get? What changes if I get digital compare to if I get an analog tuner? Thank you.

Electro-Fogey replied: "Without knowing the brand and model of the two tuners you speak of, I am only guessing here, but analog TV signals are the kind that are transmitted through the air in the VHF and UHF frequency bands, and are transmitted over old-type cable. Digital TV signals are the kind that are transmitted over satellite TV, broadband cable, or digital cable. You would need the analog tuner to go from an older VCR or DVD player's video outputs, and a digital tuner if you wanted to plug it into your DirecTV or digital cable hookup, or use it in place of TiVo. Most digital TV signals have to be converted to analog anyway, and the analog tuner can get anything that's going to channel 3, so it will be able to read in just about anything. A digital tuner will be much less useful, so I would get the analog (unless you need to get some new digital HDTV signal into your PC or something)."
